Solid stretch film seals a pallet in. That is what you want for most cartons, but some loads need air to move through the wrap. Vented stretch film, also called perforated or breathable film, has holes punched through it so the pallet stays together while air can still pass through.
Which loads need vented film
- Fresh produce. Fruit and vegetables keep giving off heat and moisture after they are packed. Airflow helps them cool and keeps moisture from building up inside the wrap.
- Product packed warm. Goods that go on the pallet before they have fully cooled can trap heat and condensation under solid film.
- Loads that sweat. Pallets that move between a cold space and a warm dock can collect moisture under solid wrap. Letting it escape protects cartons and labels.
- Pipe, tubing and long items. Vented pipe wrap holds bundles together while they stay open to the air.
Hole size: more air or more hold
The size of the holes is the main choice. Larger holes move more air. Smaller holes leave more film between them, so the wrap holds the load more like solid film. Ace-Pak stocks vented film with large, medium, small and small oval holes, so you can match the film to how much airflow the product needs and how stable the pallet has to be.
Stiff or stretchable
Some vented hand film is made stiff, with large holes, for loads where airflow matters most. Stretchable vented film with medium holes stretches more as you wrap, which helps hold a taller or heavier load. If you are not sure which fits, tell us what is on the pallet and how it is stored.
Hand rolls or machine rolls
Hand rolls are for wrapping by hand. The vented hand film we stock comes in 17 and 18 inch widths, with large or medium holes. Machine rolls fit a stretch wrapper. Ace-Pak carries vented machine film in 18, 19 and 30 inch widths, including small oval hole film rated to 225 percent stretch and small hole film rated to 200 percent.
