Measuring a round can
Liners are sized width by length in inches. For a round can:
- Width: measure around the can and divide by 2. If you only have the diameter, multiply it by 3.14 and divide by 2.
- Length: the height of the can, plus half the diameter for the bottom, plus a few inches of overhang.
For square or rectangle cans, measure all the way around and divide by 2 for the width. The liner that fits your can in gallons is a starting point, not a guarantee, so measure when you can.
High density or low density
High density liners are thin and strong for their weight, but they can tear once punctured. They suit paper, office waste and other light trash without sharp edges.
Low density liners are softer and stretch before they tear, so they hold up to heavier and sharper trash: kitchens, break rooms and outdoor cans.
Mil and micron
Low density liner thickness is measured in mil, and high density thickness in microns. One mil is 25.4 microns. A thin high density liner can carry the same load as a thicker low density one, so compare liners of the same type.
