The cut scale: A1 to A9
Under the ANSI/ISEA 105 standard, cut-resistant gloves are rated by how much force, in grams, it takes a blade to cut through the material. The scale runs from A1 to A9.
| Level | Grams to cut |
|---|---|
| A1 | 200 to 499 |
| A2 | 500 to 999 |
| A3 | 1,000 to 1,499 |
| A4 | 1,500 to 2,199 |
| A5 | 2,200 to 2,999 |
| A6 | 3,000 to 3,999 |
| A7 | 4,000 to 4,999 |
| A8 | 5,000 to 5,999 |
| A9 | 6,000 and up |
Your safety program decides the level for each task. A higher level is not always better: a heavier glove can cost dexterity where it is not needed.
Disposable gloves: nitrile, latex or vinyl
- Nitrile: latex free, with good puncture and chemical resistance. A common all-round choice.
- Latex: a close fit and good feel, but some people are allergic to latex.
- Vinyl: the lowest cost, with a looser fit, for short, light tasks.
